Till & payments

Close a till without hiding a discrepancy.

Reconcile the opening float, recorded sales, actual cash and provider payments.

Prepare the session

Confirm the till, location and staff session. Check that parked sales and incomplete transactions have been resolved or deliberately left open under your business procedure. Note any connection loss during the session.

An offline queue is not the same as a settled payment. Confirm synchronisation status before using the totals for reconciliation.

Count actual cash

Count the physical cash independently, then compare it with the expected cash after the opening float, cash sales, refunds and recorded cash movements. Record the amount counted rather than changing it to match the screen.

If there is a difference, investigate likely causes such as an unrecorded cash movement or wrong payment method. Keep an explanation with the session and use the required approval path for adjustments.

Reconcile non-cash payments separately

Compare card transactions against the payment provider or terminal. A receipt shown on a device is not proof that a failed or interrupted payment was captured. Check references and the actual transaction state.

Keep cash, card, account and other payment methods distinct. Combining them can make the overall total look right while hiding a missing payment.

Close and keep the evidence

Review the session report, any discrepancy and its explanation before finalising. Keep the final report with your records and handover notes. Use your workspace's correction process if a mistake is found after closing; do not rewrite history through a new unrelated transaction.

If a sale is still waiting to sync

Keep the device and its stored data intact. Restore the connection and check for a confirmed result. Do not clear browser data, uninstall the till or create a second sale while the first result is uncertain.

Give support the till, approximate time and transaction reference if available. Never email card details. Plan offline behaviour and supported payment methods during onboarding, using the actual counter equipment.
